Fiscal Discipline Implemented with the Passage of Pay-As-You-Go Legislation
I applaud the passage of H.R. 2920, the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act of 2009, which will require Congress to find five and ten year offsets for all new legislation that will reduce revenues or expand entitlement spending, such as Medicare/Medicaid and veterans’ benefits.
This is a significant first step towards fostering stronger fiscal discipline, but this measure does need to go further by applying PAYGO to discretionary spending as well. PAYGO goes towards highway and road improvements. As your Congressman, I will work to ensure that we strengthen PAYGO by including discretionary spending to further our commitment to fiscal responsibility and discipline.
